Networking and Telecommunication Laboratory

Academic Year: 2015/2016

The course is deeply based on laboratory experiences: it allows students to practically apply the knowledge acquired during all other telecommunication courses. The course program is split in two parts: the first is devoted to the study of telecommunication networks, with particular focus on the Internet; the second part is devoted to the study of transmission systems, and specifically on digital transmission.

This course allow students to perform laboratory experiments to deepen the knowledge and practically experience about subjects introduced in Computer Networks and Digital Transmission courses.
The first part of the course is devoted to telecommunication networks and is conducted in a lab, where students will use This course allow students to perform laboratory experiments to deepen the knowledge and practically experience about subjects introduced in Computer Networks and Digital Transmission courses.
The first part of the course is devoted to telecommunication networks and is conducted in a lab, where students will use Personal computer and/or IP Routers to set up local network. Students will learn how to configure PCs and Routers to build local and wide area networks, to manage such networks in normal condition and deal with anomalous configuration. At the end of the course, students will be able to fully understand both local area network and Internet technologies.

The second part of the course is dedicated to transmission systems. Part of the lessons will introduce new topics needed for conducting lab experiences. Students will study a typical digital transmission system and in particular will learn how to:

  • model and simulate with a software tool;
  • analyze signals both in frequency and time domain;
  • evaluate systems performance in presence of additive white gaussian noise, also in presence of inter-symbol interference.

The ability to apply the gained knowledge will be verified through lab exercise, as well as during the oral examination. The oral examination as well as the report on lab experiences will also help the students in improving their communication skills.
