Gabriella Bosco
Prof. Gabriella Bosco is a Full Professor at Politecnico di Torino, Italy, where she teaches classes on signal theory and digital communications. Her main research interests are focused on fiber optics transmission systems.
She is the President of the IEEE Photonics Society (2026-2027) and the Vice-Coordinator of the PhD Program in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering (EECE) at Politecnico di Torino.
She was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology from 2019 to 2024 and an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society from 2021 to 2023.
From 2015 to 2019 she was a member of the Academic Senate of Politecnico di Torino.
In 2017 and 2019 she was Program Chair and General Chair of the Optical Fiber Communications conference (OFC).
Brief CV
Gabriella Bosco was born in Ivrea, Italy, in 1973. She received the Laurea degree in Telecommunication Engineering in 1998, with a thesis on nonlinear propagation effects in WDM optical systems, and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic and Communication Engineering in 2002, with a thesis on the performance analysis of optical communication systems, both from Politecnico di Torino, Italy.
In 2000, she was a visiting researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the research group led by Prof. Blumenthal, where she worked on performance monitoring techniques for optical systems. From 2002 to 2011, she held a postdoctoral position in the OptCom Group at Politecnico di Torino. She then served as Assistant Professor from 2011 to 2014 and as Associate Professor from 2014 to 2019.
She is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at Politecnico di Torino, where she teaches courses on signal analysis and processing. Her research activity focuses on optical communications, with particular emphasis on the performance analysis and design of optical transmission systems and on the application of digital signal processing techniques to optical links.
Since 2002, she has actively participated in numerous projects funded by the European Commission, including E-Photon/One, Nobel, BONE, and Euro-FOS, as well as in several research projects supported by national and international companies such as Huawei, Cisco, Telecom Italia, and ESA.
She has coauthored several book chapters and more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals and conference proceedings. She was one of the winners of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology “Best Paper Award” in 2014 and 2015.
Since 2011, she has served on the technical program committees of several major international conferences, including the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO), the IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), for which she served as Program Chair in 2024 and General Chair in 2025, and the Optical Fiber Communication conference (OFC), she served as Program Co-Chair in 2017 and General Co-Chair in 2019.
From 2019 to 2024 she served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, after previously serving as Associate Editor from 2014 to 2017 and as Deputy Editor in 2018.
She was elevated to Fellow of Optica (formerly OSA) in 2017 and to Fellow of the IEEE in 2019, for contributions to modeling and design of coherent optical communication systems. In 2024 she received the IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Service Award for “dedicated service to the Photonics Society with exceptional contributions to Publications and Conferences”.
She is currently serving as President of the IEEE Photonics Society (2026–2027) and as Vice-Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering (EECE) at Politecnico di Torino.
